Auburn sports: What’s going on in the weight room; Casey Mize goes No. 1 overall

Auburn football is the No. 1 topic in the War Eagle Wakeup every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Tigers sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Auburn football, recruiting, basketball and more.

What’s going on in the weight room?

The offseason is one of the most important parts of a complete year of college football. It’s where all those student-athletes you see get strong enough to compete on Saturdays. But what does that look like exactly?

Well, if you’re paying attention at all to Auburn football, you probably know that strength and conditioning coach Ryan Russell earns all types of praise from current and former players. The transformations by guys like Jeff Holland and Big Kat Bryant have been more than noticeable on and off the field.

So here’s what that process looks like and be warned, it’ll probably make you feel bad about your cardio workout:

While everyone works hard in the weight room, these are four guys who separated themselves from the rest in the weight room. Auburn receiver Nate-Craig Myers leads the way.

Get your tickets

For those who are struggling with patience ahead of the 2018 season, here’s a little fix to get you through June: season tickets are available now.

Auburn will go on the road to Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Georgia and Alabama this season, but the Tigers also welcome LSU, Texas A&M and Tennessee to the Plains.

Start making your plans for the 2018 season now.

No. 1 choice

There’s just something about finishing first, and Auburn ace Casey Mize is more than familiar with that feeling.

After racking up awards and honors all season long and leading the Tigers to a regional championship in Raleigh, Mize was drafted first overall by the Detroit Tigers on Monday evening.

The Springville, Ala., native is the fifth player in the SEC to be selected first overall, joining Dansby Swanson, David Price, Luke Hochevar and Ben McDonald. The Detroit Tigers were high on Mize for a number of reasons, but here’s just a few:

  • 10-5 while leading Auburn to a NCAA Regional championship
  • Recently became Auburn’s second-ever two-time All American in program history
  • Leads the SEC with 151 strikeouts (ranks second in the country)
  • Has issued only 21 walks and has struck out 260 batters

Here’s a glimpse of the excitement in the Auburn Athletics Complex when Mize heard his name called:

The best part for fans?

Perhaps the best part of Mize’s evening for Auburn fans is that now a road trip to Motor City might be in order. That makes two standout athletes drafted by the Lions and Tigers.

Mize will join Auburn running back Kerryon Johson on one of Detroit’s professional teams.

More Bruuuuuuce

Fans have been wondering for months if Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl would be around much longer after so much controversy — and success — within his program this season.

The answer is yes. Auburn extended Pearl’s contract through the 2022-2023 season, as was announced earlier this week.

News of Pearl’s extension comes after the announcements that Austin Wiley, Bryce Brown and Jared Harper would all be returning next season. Can you say hoops season?
