Auburn football is looking for a convincing win over Washington this September.

Auburn sports: Why right start for football is so important

Auburn football is the No. 1 topic in the War Eagle Wakeup every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Tigers sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Auburn football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Right start is so important

Of all the games that will kick off the start of college football, Auburn is involved in one of the better ones.

The Tigers will face Washington on Sept. 1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which should really feel like a home game for Gus Malzahn’s program.

Auburn is used to the stage but is looking for a different outcome. A win against a quality Pac-12 foe will jump-start the Tigers into what could be a very strong 2018. A convincing victory, however, will only emphasize all of the hype surrounding players such as quarterback Jarrett Stidham. And it’ll be here before you know it.

Basketball adds another player

Auburn basketball is working on replacing a few outgoing players and is making progress.

The Tigers announced the addition of J’Von McCormick over the weekend. This 6-foot, 170-pound guard arrived on The Plains from Lee College in Baytown, Texas. He averaged 18.5 points, 6.4 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game last season as a sophomore in the Lone Star State.

Here’s what Auburn coach Bruce Pearl had to say about him:

“J’Von’s commitment comes at a crucial time for our program. He becomes our 10th eligible player on scholarship for this upcoming season and I typically play at least nine guys double-digit minutes. J’Von is a quick, athletic guard who is extremely fast end to end and is a tough competitor.”

Tweet of the day

People often forget that Malzahn is more than a football coach. And a late happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.
