Auburn was trailing by 7-0 in game 2 of the Women’s College World Series national championship series. The Tigers then mounted a massive comeback, forcing an extra inning and winning on a walk-off grand slam.
The decisive game 3 did not go Auburn’s way. The Sooners won 2-1 on Wednesday to win the national championship. The Tigers fell short.
But Auburn’s second consecutive trip to the Women’s College World Series was one to celebrate. And the Auburn softball team got a heroes’ welcome as they returned to campus Thursday:
“I’m very proud of these young ladies,” coach Clint Myers told Jeff Shearer of AuburnTigers.com. “They gave their heart, their soul. They gave their commitment. They battled. They were relentless. They lost to an outstanding Oklahoma team, well-coached, great athletes.”
It was a magical run through the tournament for the team to the doorstep of a championship. Auburn should return many of the heavy hitters from this year’s team and could find itself back in Oklahoma City next June.
For now, Auburn is celebrating a fantastic season.
