Auburn’s home game against Clemson is going to be one of the featured matchups of the opening weekend of the college football season.
Clemson is very established at the quarterback position with Deshaun Watson placed as a Heisman favorite. Clemson will come to Jordan-Hare Stadium as clear favorites as they try to get back to the College Football Playoff this year.
Who will line up under center for Auburn remains something of a mystery as training camp winds down its first week. The Tigers have a three-man competition between senior Jeremy Johnson, redshirt sophomore Sean White and junior college transfer John Franklin III. It is the kind of battle that may not sort itself completely out before the first game.
Whoever gets the start will face a major challenge against Clemson in that opener.
As things stand right now, Dabo Swinney is expecting Auburn to send out multiple quarterbacks during the game.
“I expect to see at least two play at that position,” Swinney said according to Duane Rankin of the Montgomery Advertiser. “We’ll probably see two or three running backs.
“There are so many unknowns unlike seeing a team play a game or two or three and you start to see a personality develop,” Swinney continued. “There are a lot of unknowns in preparing for them and there are some for them to because we’ve got some new players as well. It’s really difficult. For us, but we just have to really focus on what we do.”
Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said early on during practice that reps would be split equally among the three players fighting for the starting quarterback job. At some point, someone will have to emerge. At this point, it might be too early to declare a favorite or a winner.
Clearly, Clemson is not expecting anything to be revealed or resolved by the time the two teams play to open the season.
