With the season opener now 11 days away, Auburn has yet to name a starting quarterback.
But if you ask Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables — the man preparing his unit for a trip to The Plains on Sept. 3 — he’s not paying any attention to Auburn’s position battle.
“I could (not) care less. Doesn’t matter one bit to us. It’s not coach-speak. We’re going to do what we do and adjust as it goes,” Venables told reporters, per The Post & Courier’s Aaron Brenner. That’s up to them, whether or not they have confidence in their guy.”
Perhaps we’re reading too much into it, but the last part of that quote seems like a subtle dig at how tentative the SEC’s Tigers have been about their quarterback situation.
247Sports reported that Auburn would name a starting quarterback last week, and that Sean White held a slight lead over Jeremy Johnson and transfer John Franklin III. Obviously that didn’t turn out to be the case. This year now marks the latest Malzahn has ever named a starter, per al.com.

Think Auburn will have gimmicks/trick plays? Clemson DC Brent Venables: "Oh, yeah. They'll have a bunch of 'em ready for good ol' Clemson."
