Thanks to Hurricane Matthew moving back a pair of college football games to Sunday, Auburn fans won’t be able to see if the Tigers will crack the Top 25 in the major polls until Monday. However, one ratings formula is already extremely high on Gus Malzahn’s team after Week 6.
Auburn is currently rated as the No. 10 team in college football heading into Week 7 by ESPN’s Football Power Index. The 4-2 Tigers’ only two losses this season are to a pair of higher rated and undefeated teams — No. 3 Clemson and No. 7 Texas A&M.
Oddly enough, the FPI currently has 3-2 LSU one spot ahead of Auburn at No. 10, even though Malzahn’s Tigers beat the Bayou Bengals at home in Week 4.
Here’s the current ESPN FPI Top 10:
- Michigan (6-0)
- Alabama (6-0)
- Clemson (6-0)
- Louisville (4-1)
- Ohio State (5-0)
- Washington (6-0)
- Texas A&M (6-0)
- Florida State (4-2)
- LSU (3-2)
- Auburn (4-2)
According to ESPN, the FPI is “a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season.”
The ratings system also runs 10,000 simulations to project future results. FPI currently puts Auburn’s chances of winning the final 6 games of the regular season at 4.3 percent and the chance of winning an SEC championship at 2.3 percent.
FPI projected Auburn to finish the season at 8-4 with wins over Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Georgia and Alabama A&M and losses to Ole Miss and Alabama.
The FPI isn’t the only advanced ratings system that put Auburn at a high spot after Week 6, though. The latest S&P+ ratings from Bill Connelly and Football Outsiders have Auburn at No. 12 nationally. The Tigers improved 5 spots in the S&P+ following their 38-14 win at Mississippi State.
