While most of Twitter used Jordan Spieth’s meltdown at the Master’s Sunday to pin a new face to the “crying Jordan meme,” ESPN’s Mark Schlereth had other ideas.
Schlereth, a former NFL player, compared Spieth’s demeanor in failure to another young star’s in a different sport: Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

After losing the Super Bowl, 24-10, to the Denver Broncos, Newton, abruptly exited his postgame press conference early.
Spieth, on the other hand, not only had to face the media, but the golfer who usurped him as the most recent Master’s champion. Having won the tournament last year, Spieth was required to present the green jacket to 2016 winner Danny Willett.
Aware of the storm he created on Twitter, Schlereth tweeted: “Seems I struck a nerve with the Cam apologists…Good!”
