As the hype swirls around the Alabama-LSU game Saturday and its implications for the postseason, another SEC West team is lurking, looking to make its own run at the College Football Playoff.
ESPN’s Paul Finebaum went on SportsCenter on Tuesday, and when asked which two-loss team had the best chance of making it into the playoff committee’s top four at the end of the year, he didn’t point to Wisconsin or Oklahoma or even LSU.
He named Auburn.
“What if Auburn runs the table?” Finebaum said. “Well, that would include a win at Alabama. That’s the No. 1 team in the country. It would be the best win of the college football season.”
The Tigers play Alabama on the road Nov. 26. If Alabama wins this week, it becomes almost assured that the Crimson Tide would enter the Iron Bowl 11-0.
A win in that game, coupled with a win over a since resurgent LSU and a close loss to a top-5 team in Clemson, would do a lot for Auburn’s resume. And if the SEC West finishes crazily enough for Auburn to make it to the SEC title game in Atlanta, they would have a chance for another quality win, probably against Florida.
As Finebaum said, if the Tigers make it through the rest of that schedule without another loss, their resume will be very strong.
“(If) they get into the SEC Championship and win,” Finebaum said, “I don’t know how Auburn could be denied.”
