It’s probably a bad sign when the local newspapers are doing stories about how much it would cost to terminate your contract.
But that’s the reality that Auburn coach Gus Malzahn is living these days, as Matthew Stevens of the Montgomery Advertiser reported Sunday that it would cost the school $13.795 million to can Malzahn and his assistants.
The newspaper reported Malzahn would be owed $8.95 million if he’s let go at the end of the season. Then, the university could be on the hook for $4.845 million for his assistants.
That’s what happens when you follow up a 7-6 season with a 1-2 start to the 2016 campaign. This, despite reaching the national championship game just three years ago.
There is precedent at Auburn, as the school bought out Gene Chizik after the 2012 season for $7.5 million. That was two seasons removed from when Chizik won a national championship with Cam Newton leading the way.
It doesn’t get much easier for Auburn, which plays host to LSU this weekend.
