The NFL’s crusade against taunting has found it’s way to Cam Newton’s doorstep.
The Carolina Panthers quarterback was fined $9,115 for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, according to the Charlotte Observer’s Joseph Person.
In their loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Newton got caught up in the moment. After getting a first down he flipped a football at Falcons linebacker Deion Jones. Newton then threw a first-down gesture near Jones’ face.
He was flagged with his arm still in the air.
Unsportsmanlike conduct and taunting penalties are a focus of the NFL this season. They seem to want to do away with anything that appears to be showing up another team or player.
Fines have been levied on Antonio Brown, Odell Beckham Jr. and many others this season.
