While Auburn coach Gus Malzahn may have scored the goal on his latest commitment, perhaps former Baylor coach Art Briles deserves an assist on the score sheet.
4-star running back Kameron Martin, who was once committed to play for Briles with the Bears, pledged his commitment to Auburn on Sunday evening.
Martin expressed that he wanted to be a part of something special at Auburn, and feels like he’ll be able to contribute to the cause immediately.
Those sentiments all sound like the product of a good recruiting job by Malzahn and his staff, who received word from Martin after he visited TCU on Sunday.
But according to a report from 247Sports’ Keith Niebuhr, Briles gave some assistance to Martin as he made his decision.
“He helped me — I still have a great relationship with him,” Martin said, according to Niebuhr. “He just told me Auburn is a great fit for me with Coach Gus Malzahn and his coaching staff.
“He said if I was going to Baylor and he was there, it would be the same type of vibe (as at Auburn). He told me Coach Gus would take care of me. He said with him, it’s about the player, about the university. And shoot, he’s an offensive guru.”
Briles, who was suspended this off-season with intent to terminate and eventually agreed to part ways with Baylor in the midst of an investigation of sexual misconduct by members of program, is widely considered one of the most innovative offensive minds in college football. So, in that regard, it does make sense that Martin would rely on his knowledge of the game to find a program that would best fit the former Bears commit’s personality and style of play.
