Newly hired offensive line coach Herb Hand may not be as well-known to certain Auburn targets as he is with E.J. Price.
“He was also recruiting me at Penn State when he was there and at Vanderbilt,” Price said of his relationship with the former Penn State coach. “Now that he is down at Auburn, it is a new (offensive line) coach but it is not an, ‘I need to get to know this guy more thing,’ as I am pretty familiar with him.”
The four-star offensive tackle from Lawrenceville, Ga., is one of four recruits who will be officially visiting Auburn this weekend. Georgia standouts Marlon Character (Atlanta, Ga.) and Nigel Warrior (Suwanee, Ga.) will also be in attendance.
Price says this weekend’s visit will be an opportunity to further his relationship with Hand, whom he recognizes has had great success in developing offensive lineman.
“He’s definitely had true freshmen play and had Freshmen All-Americans and put guys in the league,” Price said. “So, I look forward to going to Auburn this weekend and chatting with him.”
The 6-foot-6, 311-pound tackle and one-time Georgia commit was originally scheduled to visit Auburn on Jan. 29 but opted to shuffle his visits. Earlier in the month, Price listed Oklahoma, USC and Georgia as his top schools after months of identifying the Tigers as one of his co-leaders along with the Bulldogs.
Nonetheless, Price has maintained a strong relationship with Auburn, particularly with coach Gus Malzahn. That could certainly keep the Tigers in the picture as signing day approaches.
“I have a great relationship with Coach Malzahn,” said Price. “He’s been recruiting me since my sophomore year. I believe they were one of my first five offers.
“He saw something in me early.”
