An offer from Auburn in February proved to be a springboard for Kenney Britt’s recruitment.
The three-star linebacker has emerged as a valued target for several programs. Over the last month, Britt has reported 10 new offers, as schools like Michigan and Georgia have taken notice of the Oxford, Ala., prospect.
“From teams just throwing offers to now being a school’s top priority … I’ve had a few SEC offers, but they never got back to me,” Britt told SEC Country. “Now schools are telling me I’m a top priority. It’s eye-opening.”
With his options becoming clearer, Britt unveiled a list of top schools over the weekend. The Kirby Smart-led Bulldogs were surprisingly listed at the top with Auburn trailing behind. Britt, who grew up a Georgia fan, said he felt ‘comfortable’ naming the Bulldogs his leader despite having just picked up an offer from the program.
But the Tigers, led by linebackers coach Travis Williams, remain in contention.
“I love Auburn. I really do,” Britt said. “It’s like a home away from home. (Linebackers) Coach Williams treats me like a priority. (Defensive line) Coach (Rodney) Garner, (defensive coordinator Kevin) Steele, Coach (Gus) Malzahn. I definitely love it at Auburn.”
Britt’s pathway to playing time may be clearer at Auburn than many of the schools he’s considering. Having graduated three linebackers in January, the Tigers are relatively thin at the position. Graduate transfer T.J. Neal is expected to contribute immediately, but Auburn needs to address the long-term.
Former three-star prospect Tre Threat was the only linebacker signee in the 2016 recruiting cycle.
“I definitely feel like I could play there (early), especially with the preparation Coach Williams puts you through,” said Britt, who also mentioned Florida, Georgia and LSU in the same breath.
“He’s going to get the best out of you. They don’t care about what classification you are.”
Britt will continue to make his rounds on the recruiting trail this weekend. He’ll head to Clemson on Saturday before making his way to Columbia, S.C., to visit with Will Muschamp and the Gamecocks. Britt is unsure when he’ll return to the Plains, but he’ll likely do so before the start of the season.
