Either Sean White or Jeremy Johnson will start at quarterback for Auburn when the team faces Kentucky Thursday night, but the decision won’t be made until shortly before kickoff, according to Auburn coach Gus Malzahn.
“We will have a decision before game time tomorrow,” Malzahn said on Wednesday during the SEC teleconference. “We’ll make that call right before we play.”
Johnson was benched after a 45-21 loss to LSU in Week 3. Auburn was 2-1 at the time, but the offense looked out of sync. Johnson struggled to run the offense and threw six interceptions through three games.
Since White took over, Auburn is 1-1. After a 17-9 loss to Mississippi State, White led the Tigers to a 35-21 win over San Jose State going into the bye week.
After the loss to Mississippi State, Malzahn said he felt that the offense was in “rhythm” for the first time all season, even though White has yet to throw a touchdown and has one interception in two starts.
The Auburn coaching staff has maintained that all positions are open to competition even after Johnson was initially benched.
“We just felt strong that we need to open up the competition,” Malzahn said. “We feel like it’s going to bring the best out in everybody and really feel like it has.”
The starting quarterback job may be up for grabs again, and Malzahn did not rule out using both quarterbacks against Kentucky Thursday night.
As Malzahn said Wednesday, “We’ll see how things go.”
Auburn's Gus Malzahn said he'll have a quarterback decision "before game time tomorrow… we'll make that call right before we play."
