HOOVER, Ala. — Gus Malzahn’s time table to name a starting quarterback is going to go by quickly.
The target date to name a starter will likely fall within the first two weeks of practices in August as Jeremy Johnson, Sean White and John Franklin III fight for the starting job. Gus Malzahn clarified his thoughts on the quarterbacks further during a meeting with local beat reporters Monday before the start of SEC Media Days.
“We’ve got a good plan going into fall camp trying to accelerate that and see who comes to the top,” Malzahn said. “I have a very open mind about that. I don’t have a lot of preconceived ideas about who is going to be our starter.”
Malzahn compared the competition to the battle in 2013, when newcomer Nick Marshall won the starting job two weeks into camp. The competition is “open,” Malzahn said. Freshman Woody Barrett, however, appears to already have been eliminated from the competition.
“I’m going into this fall camp with a very open mind,” Malzahn said. “I do have information on all three. All three are capable for running our offense. That’s the positive.”
Could Auburn name a starter sooner rather than later?
“Obviously earlier better than later, but we’re going to make sure 100 percent gives us the chance of winning,” Malzahn said.
