AUBURN, Alabama — Auburn might be coming off a disappointing season, but ESPN’s Football Power Index has higher hopes for the Tigers in 2016.
The Index ranks Auburn 18th nationally in the preseason ratings, which is good for seventh in the SEC just above No. 19 Florida, in the rankings.
Interestingly, the FPI projects a win total of 6.9 with an average loss total of 5.2, so in other words, a 7-5 season record in the regular season is predicted based on the upcoming schedule, which ranks as the seventh-toughest in the country, according to the FPI.
What is the FPI?
The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily.
Auburn has a 1.3 percent chance of winning the SEC Championship and a zero percent chance of going undefeated, according to the FPI.
Auburn opens the season Sept. 3 against Clemson inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.
