On Wednesday, Jacksonville State signed former Auburn tight end Landon Rice. The former Tiger originally signed with Auburn in 2016 but never played for the Tigers as he left the program. It later came out through a Title IX investigation that Rice was responsible for sexual assault while he was at Auburn.
Jacksonville State football coach John Grass was asked about why he felt comfortable signing someone like Rice, given his background. The coach ended up giving a colorful quote.
“I’d let him take my daughter to Dairy Queen any time he wanted to for a Blizzard and she’s 12,” Grass said, according to Joe Medley of the Anniston Star. “That’s how solid I feel about him.”
Rice spent the 2017 season at Mississippi State Gulf Coast Community College. Originally he was a 4-star recruit in the 2016 class and the No. 8 tight end in the country. Auburn signed the No. 12 recruiting class in the country on Wednesday, which was also third in the SEC.
Jacksonville State last played Auburn in 2015, and the Tigers narrowly won that game 27-20. Auburn opens its 2018 season against Washington on Sept. 1. The game will be played in Atlanta.
