AUBURN, Alabama — The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry doesn’t need much to spark interest between the Auburn and Georgia fan bases.
Georgia basketball coach Mark Fox, however, added more fuel to the fire between Auburn and Georgia fans during a speaking engagement in Columbus. Speaking to the crowd of Georgia fans about new football coach Kirby Smart, the longtime Alabama defensive coordinator, Fox needed only a few words to excite the crowd.
“He’s used to beating Auburn,” Fox said, drawing a loud applause, according to the Macon Telegraph.
Alabama was 6-3 against Auburn with Smart as its defensive coordinator. Smart was reportedly in talks with Auburn for its coaching job before Gus Malzahn was hired in December 2012.
Former Georgia coach Mark Richt finished his career with the Bulldogs winning eight of the last 10 games in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.
