Auburn is reportedly close to naming a defensive coordinator.
Tigers coach Gus Malzahn said the search is nearing its completion after Sunday’s bowl practice, and the decision could be made by the end of the week, according to AL.com reporter Brandon Marcello.
“Defensively, as far as our defensive search, it’s going very well,” Malzahn said. “We should have someone hired in the near future.”
Auburn has been without a permanent defensive coordinator since Will Muschamp left the Tigers to become the head coach at South Carolina on Dec. 6. Malzahn had reportedly targeted Florida State coach Charles Kelly to replace Muschamp. However, Kelly decided to remain with the Seminoles.
South Florida defensive coordinator Tom Allen has been reported as a candidate. Marcello also mentions Mississippi State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz as a possible suitor. Linebackers coach Lance Thompson has served as interim defensive coordinator since Muschamp’s departure.
