Florida State defensive coordinator Charles Kelly was reported as a favorite to accept the same position at Auburn on Thursday, but now it appears he will remain with the Seminoles next season.
Kelly will not be the heir apparent to the departed Will Muschamp, according to a report by Football Scoop. Muschamp recently left Auburn to take the South Carolina coaching job after one season as the Tigers defensive coordinator. It is not clear whether a formal offer was made to Kelly.
Kelly played football at Auburn (1986-89) under former coach Pat Dye, so there was speculation that he may return to his alma mater. However, Kelly told a Florida State recruit on Thursday night that he “isn’t going anywhere,” per the Tallahassee Democrat’s Safid Deen.
Kelly’s defense was ranked 15th nationally in total defense this season and fifth in points allowed per game. It would have been an impressive hire for Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, but for now the search continues.
