Art Briles to the SEC? It’s not as far-fetched as you may think.
In fact, SEC on CBS studio analyst Rick Neuheisel already has a school picked out for the former Baylor head coach, who was removed from his role prior to the 2016 football season amidst an investigation of his football program.
Neuheisel was on Sirius XM’s College Sports Nation on Tuesday, and he made a bold prediction about Briles coaching at Auburn in 2017.
“I have a prediction,” he said. “Art Briles will be at Auburn next year. Whether it’s head coach or the offensive coordinator– Art Briles to Auburn. Along with Jarrett Stidham.”
Stidham is a highly-touted quarterback who announced his transfer from Baylor following the dismissal of Briles. He has been spotted visiting Auburn in recent months.
Neuheisel, who is a former FBS head coach at Colorado, Washington and UCLA, said a move to bring Briles to The Plains would improve Auburn’s offensive outlook “immediately.” You can listen to the clip here:
While there is no questioning Briles’ offensive mind, one does have to wonder if he’s too much of a public relations liability following his highly-publicized ousting from Baylor.
Gus Malzahn, who himself has been considered an offensive innovator at the college level, has watched his team’s offense sputter for the better part of the last two seasons. His Tigers are off to a 1-2 start the season, and there already are grumblings among fans and media about his long-term future with the program if his team does not improve on last season’s 7-6 record.
