The Auburn Police Division confirmed it had a suspect in relation to the Toomer’s Corner fire, according to a statement released Sunday morning obtained by SEC Country.
The name of the suspect was not released, but the statement did identify him as a 29-year-old male from Auburn who is not affiliated with the university.
“Witnesses at Toomer’s Corner identified a suspect, who was immediately detained and taken into custody by police on an unrelated charge of public intoxication,” the police department said in a statement.
Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs already had tweeted the police had a suspect in custody earlier in the day.
The statement went on to add officials are evaluating the damage to the Toomer Oak tree and the case remains under investigation by Auburn Police. Additional charges are anticipated, according to the release.
