Where does Auburn stand with a handful of key targets?
With the recruiting dead period in full effect, we examined the five most important recruiting battles taking place between Auburn and opposing programs ahead of National Signing Day.
Check them out below.
Derrick Brown, 5-star defensive tackle, Buford, Ga.
Schools to beat: Alabama, Tennessee, UGA and Mississippi State
Days ago, Brown denounced Auburn as his leader, contrary to an earlier report. But the Tigers still have a shot to land Georgia’s top-rated prospect. Alabama, Tennessee, UGA and Mississippi State are a handful of other schools that could land his signature, too. Brown is slated to take official visits to UGA, Auburn and Tennessee in January. He officially visited Alabama just days before the start of the NCAA recruiting dead period.
Nate Craig-Myers, 4-star wide receiver, Tampa, Fla.
Schools to beat: Ole Miss, North Carolina, Florida, South Carolina and Maryland
Craig-Myers de-committed from Auburn over the summer, but the Tigers are still a possible landing destination for the four-star receiver. Craig-Myers will take an official visit to The Plains immediately following the conclusion of the NCAA recruiting dead period on Jan. 15. Ole Miss, North Carolina, Florida, South Carolina and Maryland appear to be the handful of schools in contention with Auburn to land him. Craig-Myers will also take an official visit to Ole Miss later in January.
Marlon Character, 4-star safety, Atlanta, Ga.
Schools to beat: South Carolina
Character, a one-time South Carolina pledge, is a name to keep an eye on as Auburn’s defensive coordinator opening becomes clearer. The four-star defensive back de-committed from the Gamecocks back in November and committed to the Tigers in part because of the uncertainty of the Gamecocks staff and his relationship with Will Muschamp and Travaris Robinson, both of whom have now set up shop in Columbia, S.C. It’s possible that Character could be a candidate to flip yet again, and his recruitment will likely come down to South Carolina and Auburn.
Prediction: South Carolina
Landon Dickerson, 4-star offensive tackle, Hudson, N.C.
Schools to beat: Florida State and Tennessee
Early reports in December suggested Dickerson was leaning towards three schools in particular — Auburn, Florida State and Tennessee. Two other programs he is still considering, Georgia and Virginia Tech, have experienced complete coaching transitions in recent weeks, which may have impacted his recruitment. Nonetheless, the Tigers face stiff competition in both Tennessee and Florida State, particularly the Seminoles. Dickerson told SEC Country a few months back that Jimbo Fisher and his staff were the most genuine coaches he’s met on the recruiting trail.
Prediction: Florida State
Rashan Gary. 5-star defensive tackle, Paramus, N.J.
Schools to beat: Michigan and Ole Miss
Gary appears to be a longshot to sign with Auburn following Will Muschamp’s departure and his mother’s pointed response to the one-time Tigers defensive coordinator’s decision. Nonetheless, he is a big target on Auburn’s board, and the program is facing stiff competition in Michigan and Ole Miss, two programs that have emerged as favorites in recent weeks.
