There’s sports betting, and then there’s this.
Last weekend’s Auburn-Clemson game wasn’t expected to be particularly close — most books had Clemson favored by eight or nine points on the road — but one bettor at the Hyatt in Lake Tahoe was so confident in Clemson that he staked $122,000 on a straight-up bet on coach Dabo Swinney’s crew, according to ESPN’s David Purdum.
This guy was probably freaking out all night, as Auburn kept the game surprisingly close behind a stout effort from its defense. But when the final whistle blew, the gamble paid off in a big way, netting him a reported $38,125 in winnings.
However, the bookies also made out big in the game’s final minute, when Swinney went for the first down on 4th-and-4 and passed up an easy field goal opportunity. That allowed Auburn to cover the spread.
Bottom line: Lots of money was made (and lost) this weekend. We hope any of our betting readers made out okay.
