Jochen Wiest has been charged with a felony after allegedly setting fire to one of the trees at Toomer’s Corner on Saturday, and one Auburn student helped catch him.
Herron Taylor, a junior at Auburn, told AL.com’s James Crepea that she saw Wiest light the toilet paper on the tree and then return to his group of friends “like nothing had happened, watching it go up in flame.”
“I was already mad at him, of course, I mean furious,” Taylor said. “And then when he was like kind of trying to back away from me, get away, that made me more mad. And I was like, ‘Uh-uh. I’m going to get you. You cannot run away. You’ve got to pay for this.'”
Herron said she screamed at Weist and followed him, telling people he had set the tree ablaze. Wiest allegedly fled the scene until he was surrounded and brought to the ground by a group of bystanders.
