Former Auburn defensive coordinator and current South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp has a solid sense of humor.
At his introductory South Carolina press conference, Muschamp told reporters f that his wife was the best evidence that he knows how to recruit. This time, however, the jokes were directed at his former employer.
Muschamp made the comments during a recent stop on his “Spurs Up Tour” in Charleston, S.C.
From AL.com’s James Crepea:
“I think a huge strength of ours is the city of Columbia,” Muschamp told the crowd in Charleston last week. “The diversity, the culture that we have, there actually is a town where our college is. You ever been to Auburn? There’s so much to sell in (Columbia). Just kidding about Auburn.”
The former Tigers defensive coordinator also reportedly took a shot at Georgia, his alma mater, and another at the Tigers, according to Crepea:
It apparently wasn’t the only playful barb Muschamp directed at Auburn this offseason. During another speaking engagement he made a joke about his alma mater, Georgia, and according to someone in attendance, also joked about getting a degree from Auburn but it all required was learning to “put the tractor in reverse.”
Muschamp’s sister-in-law, Mary, is an Auburn alumna and his nephew Robert is currently a walk-on with the football team. But the coach said the jokes were not malicious.
“That’s not totally true,” Muschamp told Crepea about the nature of his comments. “… My sister-in-law went to Auburn, I like to dig her a little bit but other than that…”
Unless it’s in the postseason, Auburn and Muschamp won’t be able to settle this on the field, but the Gamecocks do host the Bulldogs on Oct. 8.
