HOOVER, Ala. — Gus Malzahn has narrowed his focus to three quarterbacks for the starting job.
Malzahn, speaking to local beat reporters before his engagement at SEC Media Days, said upperclassmen Jeremy Johnson, John Franklin III and Sean White are the favorites in the battle entering practices in August.
“Starting our fall camp, we’ll be focusing on the older guys a little bit more, but we will bring him along,” Malzahn said.
Does that mean Barrett, the four-star dual-threat quarterback out of Florida, is completely out of the race?
“Every player has a shot, but realistically right now the three older guys are going to be ahead,” Malzahn said.
Malzahn did not rule out the possibility of Barrett playing for the Tigers as a true freshman, though he said on National Signing Day the quarterback would have a shot at winning the starting job.
“We’ll bring Woody along,” Malzahn said Monday. “That’s not saying he won’t play this year but that’s really where are right now.”
