GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The streak has hit five.
The Florida Gators dropped their SEC finale against South Carolina 28-20 on Saturday to fall to 3-6 overall (3-5 in SEC play) and adding the latest hit to a program that continues to free fall.
Despite the loss, Florida remained at No. 11 in the latest SEC Country Power Poll, just behind Ole Miss and just ahead of Arkansas.
After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, the Gators rallied and managed to make it a one-possession game after Mark Thompson’s 1-yard touchdown run with 3:43 left to play. Florida’s defense forced a three-and-out to get possession back with 3:19 to play, but the Gators’ last hopes of tying the game became obsolete when Feleipe Franks threw a game-sealing interception with 1:06 left on the clock.
Injuries once again impacted the team, as starting quarterback Malik Zaire (left knee) and center T.J. McCoy (left foot) were knocked out of the game.
“Like the way these guys fought. They hung in there. Nobody quit. That tells you something about this program. Real excited about it,” interim coach Randy Shannon said after the game. “I told those guys in that locker room, this Gator football team, this Gator program, is in good hands because of what those guys showed today. That they never quit. Gators never quit, and those guys didn’t quit.”
Now, the Gators have two home games left to close out the regular season. First up is a game Saturday against UAB. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on the SEC Network.
SEC Country’s Power Poll voters placed Alabama in the No. 1 spot, where the Crimson Tide were last week and all season.
