Could Bob Stoops be making a return to Gainesville? According to one reporter, he’s on the short list.
According to Forbes’ Darren Heitner, who reported earlier that Memphis coach Mike Norvell was the leading candidate, Stoops, along with Matt Campbell of Iowa State, Dino Babers of Syracuse, Dan Mullen of Mississippi State, Central Florida’s Scott Frost and Virginia Tech’s Justin Fuente are names of interest for the potential Florida opening.
Names of interest I’ve heard for UF:
Frost (more likely Nebraska)
Bob Stoops (expensive)

Stoops retired from coaching earlier this year after a successful career at Oklahoma, but he is only 57 years old (Nick Saban is 65). And he was defensive coordinator for the Gators in the 1990s.
While Jim McElwain still is the coach for the Gators, it appears that his time in Gainesville might be coming to an end. And while McElwain has led the Gators to two consecutive SEC East titles, Stoops would be a clear upgrade over McElwain. He is perhaps the one candidate who Florida should back up the Brink’s truck to hire.
The Gators take on Missouri next week. Florida is 3-4 on the season.
