Florida’s search for a new kicker has taken multiple twists and turns in the week since the team announced it was holding tryouts for a walk-on kicker to join the team.
On Thursday, former Gainesville High kicker Dallas Stubbs, who had previously walked on to the team in 2013 but was cut to make room for Virginia Tech transfer Brooks Abbott and Jorge Powell, was tagged in a post on Twitter by UF gymnast Kytra Hunter indicating Stubbs had won the job.
In a conversation with Stubbs, he confirmed he had won the job but later indicated the decision was not final.
McElwain clarified the kicking competition on Monday, saying a final round would be held between three kickers later in the day.
“It’s one of those deals where we’ll have some more kicking today, actually, with about three guys that passed through that,” McElwain said.
“It could be one guy’s a kickoff guy, one guy’s a short field goal guy, one guy’s a long field goal guy. I can’t tell you other than the guys we’re going to bring back and work out.”
