New Florida coach Dan Mullen has his guy.
Mullen and UF quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson both recruited Jones to Mississippi State and that relationship helped the Gators win him over during the final week of his recruitment.
“I feel like Coach Mullen and Coach Johnson do a great job of developing quarterbacks and developing them as a man,” Jones told SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner on Wednesday. “It’s just a blessing to have the opportunity to go to the University of Florida.”
Mullen first contacted him on Dec. 4 and began to gauge his interest in the Gators. When Ohio State landed QB Matthew Baldwin three days later, Jones said he knew the Buckeyes weren’t the right option for him and started looking into Florida.
“Coach Mullen told me he always wanted me, but he just thought I was solid to Ohio State,” Jones said. “So me and Coach Mullen just started texting. It was just crazy how God put that in front of me for Coach Mullen to come back in my life at this time. He offered me my first scholarship, so it’s crazy for me.”
Jones and Johnson also built a strong relationship during the recruiting process and the opportunity to play for him made Florida appealing. Johnson kept in contact with Jones even after he picked the Buckeyes.
“It’s always been a great relationship with him, since the beginning,” Jones said of Johnson. “When I was committed to Ohio State, he always checked up on me and asked how I was doing. So him coming back into my life, it’s just even better. We have grown so much together and I feel like it’s a great place for me.”
How did Meyer react when Jones told him he was going to play for Mullen and the Gators?
“It was kind of weird,” Jones said, “but I’m pretty sure Coach Meyer feels like I’m in good hands.”
