GAINESVILLE, Fla. — After emerging as Florida’s starting center over the final 4-plus games of last season, expectations are high for redshirt sophomore T.J. McCoy in 2017.
Both within the team and from the outside.
McCoy has been named to the spring watch list for the Rimington Trophy, which is awarded annually to the most outstanding center in college football.
Ohio State’s Pat Elflein won the award in 2016. McCoy is one of 8 SEC centers on the 2017 watch list, which includes 63 players overall.
McCoy came off the bench in the Gators’ Nov. 12 game against South Carolina and remained a fixture at the position the rest of the season.
He was the victim of a hit-and-run accident this offseason while riding a scooter in Gainesville, but speaking two weeks ago he said he has fully recovered from the incident.
Florida coach Jim McElwain has said he feels the offensive line can be a “true strength” for the Gators in 2017.
