GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Dameon Pierce was one of three Florida commits in attendance Saturday for the Gators’ 36-7 win against Alabama-Birmingham.
The 4-star running back from Bainbridge, Ga., is still planning to sign with the Gators on Dec. 20 and enroll early the following month. However, that commitment is contingent on Florida hiring a big-name coach and retaining Gators assistant JaJuan Seider — Pierce’s primary recruiter.
Pierce wasn’t shy about his support for Chip Kelly’s candidacy.
“Man, look, if Chip Kelly comes here, I’m gonna hit some cartwheels,” Pierce said. “I grew up an Oregon fan, I grew up a Chip Kelly fan. If Chip Kelly comes here, that’s icing on the ice cake.”
Pierce added that Kelly would be his No. 1 choice for the job.
“Of course,” he said when asked. “Unless we get Nick Saban, which ain’t happening.”
Florida commit Jaleel McRae, a 2019 safety from New Smyrna Beach, Fla., also is on the Kelly bandwagon after doing some research last week on the former Oregon coach.
“Hopefully, they bring in Chip,” McRae said. “If they bring in Chip, the offense is going to be rolling. Florida is going to always have defense. It doesn’t matter who the DC is going to be.
“I looked up on YouTube just about Chip Kelly and I loved the way he carried himself. He’s the man. If he comes here, he’ll be the man for the Florida Gators.”
