GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida coaches aren’t just trying to recruit Devan Barrett to their school.
They’re also battling amongst each other for the four-star athlete’s future position.
Barrett is a talented running back for Tampa (Fla.) Catholic and rushed for 1,891 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2015. But the 6-foot-1, 190-pound also possesses the ideal frame of a cornerback and has received interest at that position as well.
Barrett said he doesn’t have a preference and will figure it out in college, but a pair of UF assistants are already trying to influence him.
“They offered me as an athlete,” Barrett said. “I talked to coach Torrian (Gray), the DB coach, he said he really wants me. The running back coach, coach (Tim) Skipper, he said he really wants me, too. They’re kind of competing for me.”
No matter where he plays, Florida is confident it will land Barrett.
“Coach said by the end of it all, I’m going to be a Gator,” he said. “Florida is definitely one of my top schools. I look forward to this recruitment.
“I’m super happy I got the offer. Really looking into it. It was my favorite school growing up. It’s a great school.”
Barrett said he’s drawn to more than just the coaches at UF.
“It’s about the people around here,” he said. “They have good people, good coaches, good trainers, doctors and everything. All in all, it’s a great place to be at.”
Barrett currently holds 25 offers, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, LSU and Tennessee. He plans to visit North Carolina and South Carolina next.
“I really don’t have any favorites,” Barrett said. “It’s early in the process, so I’m trying to take my time and make the right decision.”
