The team announced through its Twitter account shortly before kickoff that All-American cornerback Vernon Hargreaves would miss the Gators’ second game of the season with a leg injury. Hargreaves “tweaked” a leg injury in Thursday’s practice. During the game, linebacker Alex Anzalone left in the first half with a shoulder injury and never returned. It’s the same shoulder Anzalone had surgery on in March of 2013.
Let’s discuss each injury. It seems like Hargreaves should be available next week. Even after it was announced that he wouldn’t be playing against East Carolina, he took the field in full uniform for warmups and fielded punts less than an hour before kickoff.
“He tweaked a leg on Thursday and we kind of thought he could get through and just felt during warm-up he couldn’t,” McElwain said. “As you know I will not put anybody out there that’s not able to go full-speed so it’s not worth it.”
As for Anzalone, linebacker Jarrad Davis did not paint a positive picture after the game.
“I came in at halftime and I went into the training room to look for him and he was getting an X-ray,” Davis said. “I saw his parents in there and they didn’t really look too excited. I didn’t know what they were thinking. I just told him I would see him after the game. I never like to see things like that.”
Linebacker is already a thin position for Florida. If Anzalone is out, Antonio Morrison and Davis will need to carry a heavy load.
We should know more about both injuries on Monday.
