Florida cornerback Duke Dawson found himself on yet another preseason watch list this summer after being named on Friday to the watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to college football’s top defensive back.
Dawson, a senior who was also named to the Bednarik Award watch list and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list earlier this week, played in 12 games during the 2016 season with seven starts at nickel cornerback. He recorded 24 total tackles (3.5 for loss) as a junior and returned his lone interception for a touchdown against Arkansas. Dawson is projected to start at outside cornerback for the first time in his collegiate career this season in order to alleviate the loss of Quincy Wilson and Jalen Tabor, both of whom were selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
He is one of 45 defensive backs named to the initial watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award. The full list can be found here.
