Two more Florida football players have been named to preseason watch lists for national college football awards.
T.J. McCoy is one of 70 players to appear on the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, which was released Tuesday morning and is given annually to college football’s top center. Tight end DeAndre Goolsby is one of 55 on the watch list for the John Mackey Award, presented annually to college football’s top tight end.
McCoy moved into the lineup during Florida’s 20-7 win against South Carolina following a pair of injuries to fellow offensive linemen. He played the final three quarters of that game at center and then started the final four games of the season against LSU, Florida State, Alabama and Iowa.
McCoy, a 6-foot-1, 308-pound redshirt sophomore and the son of former Florida defensive tackle Tony McCoy, is set to anchor an offensive line that is set to start at least four players who had active roles last season (left tackle Martez Ivey, McCoy, right guard Tyler Jordan and right tackle Jawaan Taylor). Redshirt freshman Brett Heggie is the frontrunner heading into fall camp for the starting left guard job. Fred Johnson, a junior with 10 career starts at right guard and right tackle, will likely come off the bench.
Goolsby started 10 games in 2016, catching 38 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns. He recorded a career-high eight catches during Florida’s 13-6 win against Vanderbilt — that’s one shy of the school record for most catches by a tight end in a single game. According to Pro Football Focus, Goolsby had an FBS-low 2.56-percent drop rate among returning tight ends.
The Gators now have five players on preseason watch lists for four awards heading into the season. The full list of Florida players on national award watch lists is below.
