Welcome to Chomp Chat, SEC Country’s daily Florida podcast with reporter Zach Abolverdi and Gators broadcaster Jeff Cardozo.
It’s been two years and counting without a Florida player wearing No. 1, and it’s still to be determined whether that will change this season.
On his speaking tour this week, Gators coach Dan Mullen was asked if anybody would be awarded the jersey number in 2018.
“You’ve got to be a baller to be No. 1,” Mullen said, according to SEC Country’s Ryan Young. “I don’t know if I have anybody at No. 1 just yet. I don’t know if anybody’s done enough.”
When Mullen was the offensive coordinator at Florida from 2005-08, former Gators wide receiver Percy Harvin earned the number after starring as a freshman in 2006 (sporting No. 8). He finished his three-year college career with more than 3,700 total yards and 32 touchdowns.
In the latest edition of Chomp Chat, we discuss Florida players who could be candidates to wear No. 1 under Mullen.
Here are the topics on the show Thursday:
- The Gators have a few wide receivers who could emerge as big-time playmakers in Mullen’s offense. Sophomore slot receiver Kadarius Toney showed flashes as a freshman and will be used like Harvin, so he’s going to be the mix for the number along with transfers Trevon Grimes and Van Jefferson.
- The No. 1 jersey is not just reserved for offense. Former Florida defensive backs Vernon Hargreaves III (2013-15) and Reggie Nelson (2005-06) both wore the number and — like Harvin — were first-round picks in the NFL draft. Sophomore cornerback Marco Wilson could be another current player to watch.
- We break down the contract numbers for Mullen’s coaching staff, including a big payday for new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. He is now the highest-paid assistant in school history.
