As Jim McElwain tries to rebuild Florida football into a championship program, one of his mottos is “recruit daily or die.” Join us here on SEC Country for a daily recap of the latest UF recruiting news, tales from the trail and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.
Huge recruiting weekend
Florida is scheduled to host 13 official visitors, including 5-star defensive ends K’Lavon Chaisson (Houston) and LaBryan Ray (Madison, Ala.). The Gators are not considered the team to beat for either prospect, but getting the final trip is always key.
Alabama and Tennessee are Ray’s other finalists, while Chaisson told SEC Country his top 2 schools are LSU and Texas.
Staying on the defensive line, UF is hosting three tackles committed elsewhere. Twin brothers Brandon and Breyon Gaddy (Virginia Beach, Va.) are Maryland pledges, and Devonte Wyatt (Decatur, Ga.) is a member of Georgia’s class.
Perhaps the most important recruit on campus this weekend is 4-star cornerback Brad Stewart (New Orleans). His position is Florida’s No. 1 need for the Class of 2017. Stewart will decide on National Signing Day and visited Arkansas, Arizona State and TCU this month.
The Gators will also host 3-star cornerback Brian Edwards (Miramar, Fla.) and Houston defensive back commit Donovan Stiner (Bellaire (Texas), who received an offer Thursday. Edwards is considering Louisville and Miami.
Florida is also hoping to flip Miami offensive tackle commit Zalontae Hillery (Brunswick, Ga.) and Oklahoma wide receiver commit Charleston Rambo (Cedar Hill, Texas). Former UF running back commit Adarius Lemons is visiting this weekend and hopes to rejoin the class.
The Gators are also bringing in a pair of sleeper recruits: defensive end Abule Abadi (Lakeland, Fla.) and linebacker Lacedrick Brunson (Miami). Abadi received an offer from Florida on Tuesday.
Targets visiting elsewhere
Florida’s top target at defensive tackle, Tedarrell “T.J.” Slaton, is visiting Georgia. The Gators lead for the U.S. Army All-American heading into the trip.
Levi Jones, a 4-star linebacker from Austin, Texas, is at Florida State this weekend. The Under Armour All-American named UF his leader after visiting the school on Jan. 13.
Eric Stokes also took a trip to Florida two weeks ago, and the 3-star cornerback from Covington, Ga., will check out Ole Miss this weekend.
News & notes
- McElwain conducted an in-home visit Friday with 4-star wide receiver James Robinson (Lakeland, Fla.), his top target at the position. Despite visiting Ohio State last weekend, Robinson is expected to decide on National Signing Day between Florida and Oklahoma.
- Nick Smith planned to make his decision on signing day, but the 3-star linebacker from Orlando will now announce Saturday at 6 p.m. The former N.C. State commit visited UF last weekend and Michigan State on Jan. 13.
Tomorrow at 6 PM ? but until then ?✌?……
