Florida Gators QB Austin Appleby was impressed when his head coach, Jim McElwain, ran out on the field to talk to officials when starting QB Luke Del Rio got hurt against North Texas.
In a subtle bit of shade toward his former coach at Purdue, Darrell Hazell, Appleby said he’d never had a coach willing to stand up for his players like that.
“I’ve never been around a place where our coach truly cared,” Appleby told reporters on Monday. “It’s a lot of talk at some places, and you don’t really know if they truly got you. There’s no doubt about it here.”
Hall tweeted out Appleby’s full quote, which came in response to a question about McElwain’s reaction to the hit on Del Rio. Appleby called the hit “dirty.”
