HOOVER, Ala. — Florida offensive lineman Martez Ivey knew why the man in the viral shark photo that some associated with Jim McElwain wasn’t the Gators coach.
“First of all, we knew it wasn’t him, because that dude was super fat,” Ivey said, after SEC Country asked him about the photo during SEC Media Days at the Wynfrey Hotel. “I don’t think Coach Mac’s that fat. People just like to blow stuff out of proportion.”
Yes, the strange photo of a naked man on top of a shark was relived Tuesday when SEC Country’s Kyle Tucker asked McElwain about it.
Ivey, for his part, was adamant that he knew McElwain wasn’t the man in the photo from the start.
“We see him every day,” Ivey said of McElwain. “Ain’t no way.”
Florida safety Marcell Harris said he and other Florida players brushed off the incident.
“We see it all the time on social media,” Harris said. “People play jokes all the time. You can do anything with social media nowadays. You can post a picture and move one you guys had and put it on a picture of my face. It was just one of those things that was just fun and games. We just laughed at it and talked through it.”
Harris added that players spoke about the incident with McElwain once. Here’s guessing it likely won’t be a topic of conversation again soon.
“We brought it up in the meeting room, probably one time,” Harris said. “We hit it only one time. And that was probably the last time we hit on it.”
