Florida starting center T.J. McCoy was hit by an alleged drunk driver early Friday, according to a Facebook post by his father, Tony McCoy.
T.J. McCoy, who was riding on a scooter with his girlfriend, sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the hit-and-run that occurred at approximately 3 a.m. McCoy and his girlfriend, who were thrown from the scooter, were rushed to Shands Hospital in Gainesville after the incident.
According to Thomas Goldkamp of GatorBait.net, 22-year-old Samantha Meldrem was arrested after hitting the two and fleeing the scene. When she was arrested, her vehicle had a broken windshield and noticeable damage to the front.
McCoy is still hospitalized, according to Goldkamp.
Field sobriety tests were performed on Meldrem. According to a Gainesville Police Department arrest report, she admitted to officers that she had been drinking at multiple bars, including midtown district’s Salty Dog, where she had a double-shot mixed drink.
As a redshirt freshman last season, McCoy appeared in seven games and made four starts.
