Welcome to Chomp Chat, SEC Country’s daily Florida podcast with reporter Zach Abolverdi and Gators broadcaster Jeff Cardozo.
After several weeks of hosting recruits on campus for spring practices and the Orange & Blue Game, it’s time for the Florida coaches to hit the road for the spring evaluation period.
In-state high schools start spring football this week, with non-contact practices beginning Monday and the first day of contact on Saturday. The Gators have already visited some big names on the recruiting trail thus far.
In the latest edition of Chomp Chat, we discuss the spring evaluation period and how critical it is for Florida coach Dan Mullen and his staff.
Here are the topics on today’s show:
- Mullen has acknowledged that the Gators are still trying to catch up in the 2019 recruiting cycle. These next six weeks will be an opportunity for his staff to gain some ground and establish relationships further.
- Florida State’s spring game yielded three commitments for the Seminoles, and now Alabama has the nation’s No. 1 class after a big recruiting haul over the weekend. Florida fans want to see a similar surge from the Gators, but Mullen has them headed in that direction.
- We discuss former Florida legend Emmitt Smitt donning Georgia gear during a recruiting visit to UGA with his son, 2020 running back E.J. Smith. Mullen offered him a scholarship in January.
- Cardozo discusses Florida’s series win over Kentucky with Gators baseball coach Kevin O’Sullivan.
