Welcome to Chomp Chat, SEC Country’s daily Florida podcast with reporter Zach Abolverdi and Gators broadcaster Jeff Cardozo.
On a few occasions this year, Florida coach Dan Mullen has said the Gators are playing catch-up in the Class of 2019.
This weekend will be another opportunity to gain ground on the other programs competing against Florida on the recruiting trail.
Mullen and his staff will host the inaugural ‘Great Gator Grill-Out’ on Saturday. The recruiting event should be the start of new tradition at Florida, much like Friday Night Lights.
In the latest edition of Chomp Chat, we preview the big recruiting weekend for the Gators and the potential impact it could have on their 2019 class.
Here are the topics on the show Thursday:
- Mullen and his assistant coaches are recruiting prospects who have been talking with other college coaches since their freshman year of high school. The BBQ is a chance for the Florida staff to build a better relationship with their top targets and get to know them on a personal level, which will pay dividends down the road.
- We look back on the recruiting events that were created by former Florida coaches and how the ‘Great Gator Grill-Out’ will offer a new experience for those who attend Saturday.
- A preview of Florida’s expected visitors this weekend, including a trio of top-100 overall recruits in defensive end Nathan Pickering (Seminary, Miss.) and defensive backs Chris Steele (Bellflower, Calif.) and Tyrique Stevenson (Miami).
