Welcome to Chomp Chat, SEC Country’s daily Florida podcast with reporter Zach Abolverdi and Gators broadcaster Jeff Cardozo.
The No. 1-ranked Florida baseball team opens NCAA Tournament play Friday as the Gators begin their run at a second consecutive national championship.
Florida will face Columbia at noon (ET) in the Gainesville Regional. The other teams in the regional, Jacksonville and Florida Atlantic, play Friday at 6:30 p.m.
After dominating the majority of the regular season with another conference title and numerous accolades, the Gators struggled mightily in the final two weeks of May.
“It’s been an interesting year,” coach Kevin O’Sullivan said this week. “We started the season with a bull’s-eye on our back and played real well for just about the whole season until the last six, seven games. But awfully proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish. Obviously, we end up winning the SEC championship for the fifth time in 11 years, and we end up being the No. 1 national seed for the third time. We’re the only school in the country to do that.
“So it’s a lot to take in and a lot to be proud of, but certainly we’re looking forward to getting back on the winning track this weekend. Everybody starts with a clean slate and we’re excited to get out on the field Friday afternoon. … We got a new season. We’ve had a really good start to the week practice-wise and just ready to get these guys back out there and hopefully get healthy as we approach the regionals.
In the latest edition of Chomp Chat, Cardozo interviews O’Sullivan on Florida’s 2018 season, the matchups this weekend and what it will take for the Gators to go back-to-back.
