Florida’s recent recruiting weekends will be a catalyst for commitments

Welcome to Chomp Chat, SEC Country’s daily Florida podcast with reporter Zach Abolverdi and Gators broadcaster Jeff Cardozo.

Florida coach Dan Mullen and his staff played host to the inaugural Great Gator Grill-Out on May 19 at the indoor practice facility. The barbecue didn’t produce any public pledges, but Florida had more than 10 top targets on campus and recruits raved about the event afterward.

And for the second consecutive recruiting weekend on campus, the Gators took the lead for a 4-star visitor. Chicago tight end Jahleel Billingsley called Florida his No. 1 school after attending the cookout Saturday, and New Orleans cornerback Chester Kimbrough did the same thing following the Orange & Blue Game on April 14.

Kimbrough said he doesn’t plan to make his pledge soon, but Billingsley hopes to have a decision before the start of his senior season. He is one of nine recruits who could commit to the Gators in June, July and August.

In the latest edition of Chomp Chat, we discuss how the recent recruiting weekends at Florida will be a catalyst for commitments in the coming weeks and months.

Here are the topics on the show Wednesday:

  • Mullen and his staff have been behind the eight ball in this recruiting cycle compared to the long-term relationships between recruits and coaches at other schools. The Great Gator Grill-Out allowed to the staff to make up for missed time and make critical connections that are needed for commitments.
  • Moreover, Florida gave visitors a unique recruiting experience that will be unmatched at other schools they check out. That dynamic could make a difference during the decision-making process.
  • An interview with top-50 overall recruit and 4-star defensive end Nathan Pickering (Seminary, Miss.), who discusses his latest visit to Florida and the strong bond he has with Mullen.
