Florida recruiting: Comparing Dan Mullen’s first 6 months to others

The first six months of Florida recruiting has been promising for first-year coach Dan Mullen and his staff.

Since the early signing period on Dec. 20, nine of the Gators’ last 13 commitments have come from ESPN 300 members. That doesn’t include the recent transfers, defensive end signee Malik Langham or 2020 athlete Keyvone Lee, a top-100 overall prospect according to 247Sports.

Mullen signed one of the best transition classes in Florida history, setting a school record with a dozen 4-star signees. The Gators won battles against Alabama (Jacob Copeland, Langham), Clemson (Richard Gouraige), Florida State (Emory Jones), Miami (Andrew Chatfield) and Ohio State (Jalon Jones).

The Gators are seemingly off to a slow start with their 2019 class, which is currently ranked No. 32 nationally in the 247Sports composite. However, Mullen’s recruiting results thus far have been on par with other top college coaches.

In the tables below, take a look at how Mullen’s first six months on the trail compares to Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Ohio State’s Urban Meyer, Auburn’s Gus Malzahn, Miami’s Mark Richt, Florida State’s Willie Taggart and former Gators coach Jim McElwain.

You can also see how each coach fared in a full recruiting cycle, the improvements made from their transition class and what type of results to expect from Mullen & Co. over the next six months. The numbers in parenthesis represent the total for each category.
