Tyquan Thornton shuts it down
For the second straight recruiting cycle, Florida and Miami are going head-to-head for several South Florida prospects.
However, the battle appears to be over for one area player.
Tyquan Thornton, a 3-star wide receiver from Booker T. Washington High School (Miami), attended the Florida-Tennesse matchup Saturday and shut down his recruitment following the game.
“That last play,” Thornton said laughing. “Nah, it was just the love from the coaches, the fans and my brothers, my future teammates. It was all love, so I just felt like it was a big family.
“The locker room was like a brotherhood. The way they stick together, you can’t break that apart. This visit actually narrowed down my recruitment. I’m ready to shut it down now.”
Thortnon reiterated his stance Wednesday night by tweeting this photo.

The Gators landed Thornon on July 24 in the midst of their summer recruiting run. Turning down his hometown Miami Hurricanes didn’t come easy, but the opportunity to play in Gainesville meant a lot.
“Florida always was my dream school,” he said. “When I came up and got the offer I knew it was my time. I feel that this is the place for me.”
Thornton is one of four receiver commits for the Gators, including top-100 recruits Jacob Copeland and Ja’Marr Chase. They also have a pledge from 3-star athlete Jalynn Williams and hold the lead for 4-star wide receiver Anthony Schwartz (read more).
Thornton is unfazed by Florida signing a large WR class.
“It doesn’t concern me at all. Zero concerns,” Thornton said. “I grew up competing against a lot of great players. I never started when I was younger. I had to work for my spot. When I get to Florida, I’m going to do me. It will be good to have other guys come in with me.”
As for the game Saturday, Thornton liked what he saw from Gators quarterback Feleipe Franks and his group of receivers — two players in particular.
“I just wanted to see them take the top off a defense and they did that,” Thornton said. “They have a lot of guys that can make plays. Tyrie Cleveland and Brandon Powell, those two got my attention. They’re explosive. It was fun to watch.”
Recruits receive new edits from Florida
In addition to Thornton’s photo, the Florida coaches also sent out new edits to their commits and top targets Wednesday night.
