Florida made big news in announcing it would rename Florida Field to honor former coach and Heisman Trophy winner Steve Spurrier. It also snuck in one more piece of stadium news.
When the Stephen C. O’Connell Center reopens in January, it will have a new look, a new name and a new partner.
The University of Florida announced Thursday it had approved renaming the stadium Exactech Arena at The Stephen C. O’Connell Center. Exactech is a company that manufactures orthopedic implants and surgical equipment based in Gainesville, Fla.
“The University of Florida is so fortunate to have a relationship with a quality organization and quality company like Exactech,” Director of Athletics Jeremy Foley told Chris Harry of FloridaGators.com. “Their values reflect the university’s values and those of the athletic association. We love the fact that it’s a local company with roots right here, right up the street from the University of Florida.”
A representative from the O’Connell family signed off on the naming agreement.
The renovations to the O’Connell Center are scheduled to be completed for commencement ceremonies on December and the start of Florida’s SEC play in January 2017. They will include seat backs for all lower bowl seats, a renovation to the concourses and a center-hung scoreboard. The O-Dome got a major facelift for the Gators.
