Antonio Nelson knew he wanted to be a Gator around 11 a.m. Monday morning right after he finished basketball practice.
Nelson, a 3-star defensive back from Carver High School (Montgomery, Ala.), committed to Florida over Troy, Western Kentucky and South Alabama. He needed to wait until Monday night to announce his commitment to talk it over with his mother.
“I had to wait until my mom got off work at 4,” Nelson told SEC Country. “I sat down to talk to her and she was like ‘this is your decision. The choice is yours.’ Once she told me she was fine with it, I wanted to make the decision. It feels really good to get this off of my back.”
Nelson’s commitment may end up helping out Florida with one of its main recruiting targets, 5-star Lyndell Wilson, who is the nation’s No. 1 outside linebacker.
The two are teammates, but the bond is much stronger than that.
“We are very close friends,” Nelson said. “He is more like a brother to me.”
Shortly after making his commitment, Wilson, who was hyping up his teammate’s announcement all day on Twitter, made sure he was one of the first to congratulate him.
But what he also said will please Florida fans.
“He is very proud of me,” Nelson said of Wilson’s message. “He told me that he wasn’t going to Florida by himself. He shot me that text and told me that.”
Nelson is commitment No. 23 for Florida. Wilson is expected to announce his commitment on National Signing Day, which falls on Feb. 3, 2016.
